Maik Voorwinden of Team Voorwinden has ridden his last supermoto race of his career at the superbiker in Mettet. Maik did a great job in qualifying and managed to qualify himself for the main event easily. Unfortunately he crashed in the first lap of the main event and lost a lot of time. Maik jumped back on his bike but unfortunately he crashed another time and decided to retire from the race.

We wish the 2012 Dutch Champion good luck in his future endeavours.

On Friday Maik had to ride a free practice session and two time practice sessions. The times in time practice decided your starting position in the main event on Sunday. Maik knew that it was important to put a fast lap together.

In the first free practice Maik struggled a little bit with his confidence because the last time that he had ridden in wet conditions was from before his injury in May. During the session things started to go better and better and he finally managed to set the second fastest time. In both time practice sessions he managed to improve on his fastest lap times and finally he ended the day in third position from the 250 riders.

On Saturday morning he had to ride a qualifying heat to qualify himself for the semi final on Sunday. Maik started this race from pole position. He took a good start and was leading when he went into the first corner. He lost the lead for a moment but fought back and a corner later he moved into the lead again. In the rest of the race he was riding his own pace and won the race with an advantage of fifteen seconds on the second place rider.

On Sunday morning he had to ride the semi final. The best twelve riders were qualifying themselves for the main event. Maik started the race from pole position and took a decent start. Unfortunately he made a mistake when he went into the offroad section and dropped back to sixth position. Because the track was dry, Maik had to get used to the fast circumstances. He needed some laps to find his rhythm but unfortunately he got a little bit of arm pump and decided to ride safe in the rest of the race. Despite the arm pump he closed down the gap to the third and fourth place riders but ran out of time to make a pass stick and finished the race in fifth position.

In the final Maik started from the third starting row. He took a good start and managed to work himself up into ninth position in the beginning of the race. Unfortunately he made a crash during the first lap and dropped all the way back to last position. Maik started a charge back through the field but crashed again and decided to retire from the race. Due to this he wasn’t able to ride the super final.

Despite this disappointing day, Maik is satisfied about his riding and retires from the sport with a good feeling. Maik would like to thank his parents, his brother, his mechanic Dennis, Remy van Rees and all his sponsors for all the help over the last few years.
